Planted over 20 years ago, the seeds of Kulanui were grown and developed at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa's College of Tropical Agriculture & Human Resources (CTAHR) Program. Working with local Papaya farmers, Professor Iwaoka challenged his students to come up with an alternate use for Papaya culls (something that has been considered a waste product). The students started the research and development,
producing the Papaya Curry Dressings and the Papaya Curry Barbeque Sauce.
Currently the Kulanui Program has grown to be system wide, producing products from UH Hilo and UH Mānoa. Coming soon will be products from Kauai Community College.
From start to finish the students of the University of Hawai’i benefit through the experience of working with “local” businesses, and creating opportunities for others in the state by utilizing facilities such as Lanakila Pacific for its manufacturing. Lanakila offers programs and services for adults with cognitive, physical, social or age-related challenges that build independence and an improved quality of life.
Our goal is to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit of Students at the University of Hawai’i, by teaching and taking them through the process of Manufacturing, Branding, and Marketing of their products.
